Honda HR-V (99 - 05)

This is a crossover with suburban styling and an excellent pokey engine. Between 1999 and 2006 it was voted the fifth most reliable car on the road. It had an affordable price tag, a thrifty engine, and the slight ability to go off-road (and by off-road we mean it can drive on muddy terrain and a thin blanket of snow at best). It makes for a formidable car. In earlier models the interior, for the most part, lacked imagination. Honda identified this and in 2002 unveiled a new-look interior. One disappointing thing about the HR-V though, is that there is only one engine, albeit a good one. It’s a 1.6-litre VTEC engine, which delivers 103bhp, 135nm of torque and can complete the benchmark 0-60 in 11.7 seconds. Not the most powerful in class but the excellent grip and sharp handling still make it a lot of fun to drive. Fuel economy is a modest 32 miles to the gallon.
